ARC Review – Paired Pursuit (Matched Desire bk 1) by Clare Murray

It had the all makings for a pretty great read. Unfortunately, reading this novel was like sitting down to a meal that smells really tasty and then taking that first bite and realizing it had no salt added to it. I mean the writing was solid, the story was coherent, and the world was pretty vivid. It was just missing something and it’s hard to put my finger on it. I didn’t dislike the story, but I didn’t like it either. ~ Afrodyt, Guilty Pleasures

“Danger rises in the night and so does desire.”

Her last living relative dead, Mari is evicted from her shipping container and leaves Flagstaff for the first time in seven years. Boarding a train for Scar City (formerly Reno), she keeps a white-knuckle grip on her debilitating panic attacks.

When the train lurches, she loses that grip and is picked up, calmed down, and turned on by the only other passengers in the car.

Finn and Gareth are under orders from their superiors to follow a slim lead on a stolen alien device. At first Mari is only a pleasant distraction, but through their telepathic Twin link, the brothers discover they both sense a powerful attraction to her that goes far beyond pheromones.

With dawning horror, Mari learns the Twins are after the same device she s seeking, her only hope to get money for a better life. Once they reach Scar City, the three realize they re living on borrowed time unless they can discover the device s secrets before attacking aliens bring the city walls tumbling down.

“Warning: Contains two genetically modified warrior heroes, a woman whose worst nightmare is wide open spaces, and distractions of a vibratory nature.”

This story takes place in a post-apocalyptic world destroyed by aliens. We are following Mari as she relocates from the relative safety of Flagstaff to Reno, which was renamed Scar City. She’s on a mission to retrieve a device her late father discovered and left hidden in the city. While taking a train into Scar City she finds herself the lone passenger with Twins, known genetically enhanced super soldiers. Finn and Gareth, the epitome of badass, sexy, man-candy, took one look at Mari and wanted her as their own. They immediately set out to do just that. The sex came early but unfortunately had very little heat. The scenes had a rather detached quality to them and because there was no sexual tension built up and almost no relationship between the characters, I was not satisfied by the encounter or the ones that followed.

There was plenty of action in this story. Some colorful characters and tension from the dire situation they found themselves in. There was even an epic battle against the aliens. Three stars.
