ARC Review – Blood Kiss (Black Dagger Legacy #1) by J.R. Ward

Blood Kiss was sexy hot, highly entertaining, and edgy with just the right amount of humor and drama. ~ Kimber, Guilty Pleasures

Paradise, blooded daughter of the king’s First Advisor, is ready to break free from the restrictive life of an aristocratic female. Her strategy? Join the Black Dagger Brotherhood’s training center program and learn to fight for herself, think for herself…be herself. It’s a good plan, until everything goes wrong. The schooling is unfathomably difficult, the other recruits feel more like enemies than allies, and it’s very clear that the Brother in charge, Butch O’Neal, a.k.a. the Dhestroyer, is having serious problems in his own life.

And that’s before she falls in love with a fellow classmate. Craeg, a common civilian, is nothing her father would ever want for her, but everything she could ask for in a male. As an act of violence threatens to tear apart the entire program, and the erotic pull between them grows irresistible, Paradise is tested in ways she never anticipated—and left wondering whether she’s strong enough to claim her own power…on the field, and off.

The new Black Dagger Legacy series, a spin-off of the uber popular Black Dagger Brotherhood byatruegemaward J.R. Ward that’s centered around a new training program for warriors, is one of the most anticipated books of 2015. If you are a fan of paranormal romance, you might have been counting this one down for months. Blood Kiss was a page turner from start to finish. So much so, I was a little bummed when it ended. It seems once I’m in BDB world, I’m never quite ready to leave.

Blood Kiss revolves around two couples with dual and entwining story lines. One couple we are very familiar with and the other is new but if you read The Shadows, you did meet them, which is where their story began. As the story unfolds, not only do the similarities in the four characters become obvious, their stories connect. Butch and Marissa are mated and have been together several years. The tragedy and trauma of their past lives has never really been resolved and as much as they love each other it keeps them from having that wholly complete perfect relationship. What we get in this story is resolution, but not before they encounter bumps in the road. If you were one to cheer when Marissa grew a backbone in Lover Revealed, you are going to flip over her now. I LOVED her in this story. Her character has evolved so much since we first met her and I am proud of the woman she’s become. Butch is still the same old funny, sexy, devoted, best dressed vampire on the planet. He’s also one of several of the Brotherhood who is in charge of the new training program. The Brotherhood has decided to bring in new trainees to help them fight in the ongoing war with the lessers. Paradise, the daughter of an aristocrat, is trying to find herself. She knows she’s not down with what is expected of her but she’s not sure where that puts her in the vampire society. The training camp appeals to where she is in her life at the moment and once she’s accepted to the program she not only embarks on what it means to physically train to be a warrior, but also finds her place, along with love. Craeg is not looking for love or complications. He wants to train with the Brothers so he can ahvenge his family.

I really enjoyed the action parts, especially the first night the trainees gather at the facilities, and I can’t wait for future books and getting to know all the new characters. Although I love J.R. Ward’s writing, it is nothing shy of perfection, I did feel the story line of Paradise and Craeg was rush at the end. I base that on, if I am reaching the end of a book and I’m wondering how all this is going to come together and then BAM, it does, all at once, that’s rushed to me. Other than that? GOLD, pure GOLD. The Brothers along with Lassiter will have you in stitches. The girl’s movie night was EPIC!!! Butch has been my favorite since I started the series years ago so yes, I was quite giddy with how much he’s in this one. It really cemented my love for his character. His and Marissa’s story line was sensational.

Blood Kiss was sexy hot, highly entertaining, and edgy with just the right amount of humor and drama. A wonderful start to this new series and surely to be enjoyed by the fans.

  1. LOVE LOVE LOVE J.R.WARD!!!!!!!! Thanks for a great review Kimber. It is going to be interesting to see where this spin off series goes. Can’t wait.

  2. I grew to really dislike the BDB series. Too many story lines in each book, too many tortured lovers, the bad guy element was weak and things dragged on and on and on. Your review makes me think I may give this new series a try. Will probably wait for another couple of reviews.
