ARC Review – Reaver (Lords of Deliverance #5) by Larissa Ione

The relationship between Reaver and Harvester has so much depth and detail, it will have you wondering how all the pieces fit until the puzzle completes and it all makes sense. Not just sense, but perfection. ~ Alyn, Guilty Pleasures

Reaver is an angel with a past, a record, and a less-than-heavenly attitude. Powerful enough to fight alongside the fiercest battle angels-and crazy enough to risk his wings on a one-way mission to hell-he’s agreed to go where no angel has ever gone before…to steal the most seductive and dangerous prize of Satan himself.

Harvester is one of the Fallen, a once-heroic angel who sacrificed her wings to work as an undercover agent in hell. But now her cover has been blown, and she’s been doomed to an eternity of agonizing torture. Even if Reaver can snatch her away from Satan’s lair, even if they can fight their way out of the underworld’s darkest depths, there is one thing Harvester can never escape-her newfound thirst for an angel’s blood…

Giddy does not describe the emotion that overcame me when this gem arrived on my Kindle. If atruegemawardyou are not familiar with Larissa Ione and you are a paranormal romance fan, the Demonica and Lords of Deliverance books need to move to the top of your TBR list pronto! The most recent edition, “Reaver” crosses over both series by finally revealing the mystery of Reaver’s past. Reaver was first introduced in the Demonica series as an Unfallen angel (an angel that had his wings taken away but did not enter the underworld to complete his fall) with no memories of his past, that worked as a paramedic at Underworld General (UG: a hospital created to serve the needs of the Demonic population hidden in the human realm). It was here that we also met Eidelon and his brothers Shade and Wraith, also known as the Sem Brothers due to the fact that they are Seminus demons (sexual demons that will make you drool in a heartbeat). The Demonica series follows these brothers and the ups and downs of a very intricate world created by Ione. Her attention to detail is impeccable as she pulls you in to a world of Heaven, Hell, Earth, and a multitude of beings that reside within them. Throughout the Sem brothers’ exploits, we meet their future mates and the possibilities of a future apocalypse. Reaver, gives his life to prevent such an occurrence and earns his wings back in the process. As an Angel, he is given the task of a Heavenly Watcher for the four horsemen of the apocalypse : Limos, Reseph, Ares, and Thanatos (Demonica now moves out and Lords of Deliverance moves in). His soul purpose is to be Heaven’s eyes and ears regarding the four horsemen and to protect them from Satan and his efforts to tilt the balance and break the seals that will create Hell on Earth through Famine , Pestilence, War, and Death. However, Reaver is not the only watcher for the horsemen. To keep the balance between Heaven and Sheoul (Hell), Satan has a watcher for the horsemen too; Harvester. She is a fallen angel and the daughter of Satan, who was once an angel himself.

This is where the story truly begins. In the previous stories, it had been revealed to Reaver that he is the father of Limos, Reseph, Ares, and Thanatos, and had conceived them with a succubus named Lillith when he was an Angel named Yenrieth (he was renamed Reaver after his memories were taken from him). Unfortunately he was unaware of their existence until they were full grown adults and cursed to be horsemen. It was revealed to him that Harvester chose to become a fallen in order to keep a promise she made to watch over Yenrieth’s children no matter the cost because she was in love with him. What was not revealed, was Yenrieth’s reaction to her or how he treated her before he became Reaver. For thousands of years she masqueraded as the most evil of beings and committed heinous acts to protect Heaven under the false purpose of proving herself to her father, Satan. Many of these acts were against Reaver himself, and yet he could not figure out why she treated him the way she did or deny there was an odd lust/hate between them. Now knowing that Harvester was acting in the better interest of his children, he needed to find her. Unfortunately, Satan discovered Harvester’s ulterior motive as well and she has become his personal torture toy. A new watcher named Revenant, has been put in her place to watch over the horsemen. As an angel, Reaver cannot enter Satan’s realm without being detected or breaking a number of Heavenly rules that could once again cost him his wings or his life. However, Harvester has endured endless pain and suffering for his children and he needs to know why. When he enlists the help of the Sem brothers to break the rules and finally reach Harvester, her condition is devastating. Even worse, she hates him with a passion. Now that he has found her, he must find his way out of Sheoul and tell her the truth about his past and who he really is. Determined to save her and learn the truth, he sets off on a quest to make it to Sheoul, save Harvester, prevent an apocalypse, and hopefully stay alive in the process.

This story was a page turner from start to finish. Larissa Ione never fails to keep readers guessing and always throws in the twists and turns that make her stories so addicting. Reaver’s angelic ways and Harvester’s devilish demeanor clash often, creating some interesting banter between the pair. What is even more interesting is how contradictory they are to their stereotypes. Although Reaver is an angel, he is very much the bad boy and he is well aware of it. Similarly, Harvester is portrayed as the evil, fallen angel, but her need to do good shines beneath her dark exterior. She is fragile underneath the armor she built up. Yenrieth/Reaver hurt her beyond repair in the past and if Reaver is not careful, she will shatter and never recover. Reaver and Harvester are not just star crossed lovers, but lovers that have a bond that transcends time and space to prove they will go through Heaven and Hell to find the love they were meant to have. The relationship between Reaver and Harvester has so much depth and detail, it will have you wondering how all the pieces fit until the puzzle completes and it all makes sense. Not just sense, but perfection. With this knowledge comes the realization that their future was foretold years in the past and their love was destined to be. For some, this knowledge was too difficult to live with, including other angels that may have had their sights set on Harvester all along.

Of course there are other subplots that continually make things interesting (reincarnating Lucifer, stealing an unborn child, jealous angels on power trips) but I don’t want to give away the story. Just know that in true Larissa Ione fashion, this story is not the end, but the beginning. As I stated earlier, there must always be a balance and every angel has their equal. Reaver is no exception and so I am now anxiously awaiting the very story of Reaver’s equal: Revenant!
