Description:
Though forced to fight for the hated English, Morgan MacKinnon would no more betray the men he leads than slit his own throat—not even when captured by the French and threatened with an agonizing death by fire at the hands of their Abenaki allies. Only the look of innocent longing in the eyes of Amalie, a convent-bred French lass, could make him question his vow to escape and return to the Rangers. And soon the sweet passion he awakens in Amalie has him cursing the war that forced him to choose between upholding his honor and pledging himself to the woman he loves

DiDi’s Thoughts:
After two days of reading Pamela Clare’s MacKinnon’s Rangers, I am asking myself – Why did it take me so long to read about Highlanders? The answer is – because I wasn’t sure I would like them. When Pamela Clare sent me an ARC of DEFIANT, the third in her MacKinnon’s Rangers series, I decided to give them a try.  Since I love Ms. Clare’s I-Team series, I felt positive that if I was going to jump into a Highlander romance, her series would be where to start. I was sure I would find her same gift for crafting a wonderful story in her MacKinnon’s Rangers series.  I bought SURRENDER and UNTAMED and am glad to say my assumptions were correct.  It’s taking all the discipline I have to write this review and not start DEFIANT right now.

The MacKinnons are not your typical Highlanders, they have been exiled to the Colonies and forced to serve the British Crown, under a leader they hate.  In SURRENDER, Iain, the oldest MacKinnon is the Major of the the Rangers. His younger brothers Morgan and Connor serve under him.

In UNTAMED, Morgan, the middle MacKinnon, is now Major MacKinnon. Morgan finds himself in the hands of the French, the very soldiers who he would be proud to serve with, but since he has been forced to serve the British Crown he is seen as an enemy, one with a huge price on his head.  Suffering what could be mortal injuries, he is nursed back to health by, innocent Amalie.  All the while he is on the mend he knows he will be interrogated, by any means necessary to betray the British, his brothers and the Rangers.

Amalie, is an innocent, who after the death of her father at the hands of the Rangers, is left under the care of the head of the French military. She is given the responsibility of helping save Morgan’s life.  Despite her hatred of the Rangers, Amalie realizes that Morgan is not the barbarian she has heard he is and starts developing feelings for Morgan while he is under her care, and is appalled that she is helping to save him only so he can be tortured and murdered once the French leaders and Abenaki are finished with him.

Seemingly insurmountable obstacles are in the path of Morgan and Amalie’s HEA. Every time I thought awwww, they are going to be ok together, something else occurs to pull them apart.  There was not a moment when I was bored or tempted to skim through the pages of this book.

The sweet innocence of Amalie is a perfect match for Morgan. Morgan is a warrior, tough, rough and crude, but so loving, tender and passionate when it comes to Amalie. The chemistry between the two was off the charts, their first time together had me sweating and fanning myself and I can’t even think about the term looking glass without breaking out in goosebumps.

I love that Iain, Annie, Connor, Joseph and the beloved Rangers made appearances in UNTAMED. The epilogue had me crying and smiling at the same time!

Pamela Clare’s MacKinnon’s Rangers series is an addictive, thrill ride full of ups and downs.  Ms. Clare takes you on a journey back to a time many of us have forgotten, with vivid descriptions and larger than life characters.  This series is a definite must read for historical romance fans, actually a must read for ANY romance fan who loves a fully developed love story with action, adventure and heart!

Here is a cool video Pamela and her son made of their trip to Roger’s Island and surrounding areas, which is where The MacKinnon’s Rangers books are set.

  4. I’ve started Pamela’s other historical romance series, but have this one on my wish list. I’ve been into highlanders since my first Diana Gabaldon.

  6. Thanks for this review, D. Since I love the I-Team series so much I was reluctant to start this series, crazy I know. But after reading this review I think I can finally dive into this series soon. I bet it will be just as great as her I-Team and I’ll be kicking myself in the arse for not starting it sooner.

  7. I remember reading and loving the MacKinnon trilogy when the books were first released.
