After her father loses the family fortune in an insider-trading scheme, single mom Parker Welles is faced with some hard decisions. First order of business: go to Gideon’s Cove, Maine, to sell the only thing she now owns—a decrepit house in need of some serious flipping. When her father’s wingman, James Cahill, asks to go with her, she’s not thrilled — …even if he is fairly gorgeous and knows his way around a toolbox.
Having to fend for herself financially for the first time in her life, Parker signs on as a florist’s assistant and starts to find out who she really is. Maybe James isn’t the glib lawyer she always thought he was. And maybe the house isn’t the only thing that needs a little TLC….
This is the hardest review I’ve had to do since joining Guilty Pleasures. There are so many things that I absolutely ADORED about Somebody to Love that I’m afraid that I might miss out on putting one of those many things in this review so please bear with me.
This is another first for Ms. Higgins in the sense that this book is her first time to ever write a follow up to a character from another story, and let me tell you… she picked the PERFECT character to follow up with! We first met Parker Welles in The Next Best Thing. As Lucy’s best friend and the mother to Ethan’s son, we got to know and love everything about her. (Even her Holy Roller children’s books). In Somebody to Love Parker loses her inheritance, her father is incarcerated because of a ponzy scheme and the only thing that she has left is a dilapidated shack that a distant relative has left her in Gideon’s Cove.
As someone who has read every book Kristan Higgins has ever written I was stoked to find out that Parker’s new house was located in Gideon’s Cove, which we were first introduced to in Catch of The Day. Higgins brings back all of the characters from COTD and reading about them again was something akin to catching up with old friends. I truly loved that I got to read about what was going on in the lives of the people of Gideon’s Cove since Catch of The Day!!
Parker finds herself going from white collar to blue collar in a matter of weeks when she discovers that she doesn’t have the money to pay someone to fix up the old house. The only help that she does have comes from the one man she DOESN’T want helping her.
James Cahill worked for Parker’s father for 6 years as his personal attorney, and with the exception of one steamy night, Parker can’t stand anything about the man that she lovingly refers to as “Thing One”.
Following along with the progression of James and Parker’s relationship is something that every reader who picks up this book is going to enjoy! KH has yet to disappoint with any of her books and Somebody to Love is just another example of how gifted a writer she is. There is a perfect combination of humor, sorrow, and romance in this heartfelt story and I am thrilled that I got a chance to read it! The only bad thing is that I now have to wait for her next release!
