“This is Corky Courrant, reporting for Live with the Undead
, the most popular show on the Digital Vampire Network.” She smiles for the camera as she opens a door. “As you can see, we are now entering Romatech Industries where guests have arrived for the engagement party of Gregori Holstein and Abigail Tucker.”
She pauses to give the camera a forlorn look. “Yes, dear viewers, it is true. Another one of our sexy male vampires is no longer an eligible bachelor. Gregori Holstein has been ensnared by one of those conniving mortal wenches. Those hot-blooded human floozies should leave our men alone!”
She marches into the foyer and peers into the ballroom. “The party appears to be in full swing. Lots of people invited. My invitation appears to have been lost in the mail, but I’m sure everyone will be delighted to see us here. This is the biggest social event of the year in the vampire world, so it is my duty as a professional journalist to cover this event and report back to you, my dear viewers.”
She enters the ballroom and the camera pans over the area, then returns to her as she wrinkles her nose. “Some of the male guests are wearing those ridiculous kilts. But still, it’s not too bad of a party. I’ve seen worse. During the Spanish Inquisition.”
She points toward the refreshment table. “I like the ice sculpture of Cupid shooting an arrow. Did you see the large banner on the wall that says ‘Gregori finally Grows Up!’ And there’s another one—‘The Mighty Gregori has Fallen!’ I suppose his friends are teasing him. Humph. Some friends. But what would you expect from barbarians who still wear kilts?”
She shudders. “What is that awful noise? Quite frankly, I am shocked. Gregori has always had such marvelous taste in clothes. I can’t fathom that he would actually like this horrid music. Ah, my cameraman has informed me that it’s called Disco.”
She gestures toward the dance floor. “And there’s Gregori now, dancing with his fiancée. Hmm, she seems a little short, don’t you think? What on earth does he see in her?” She motions for the cameraman to draw close. “I suspect this is not a love match. I hear Abigail Tucker is actually the daughter of the current American president, so the match may be politically motivated. It would certainly explain why Gregori was so quick to pop the question.”
“Ah, here’s one of the guests approaching us now.” Corky waves over a well-dressed, older woman. “Would you care to comment for our show, Live with the Undead? Tell me– are you surprised that Gregori Holstein, the most notorious playboy of the vampire world, is getting married?”
Corky appears shocked. “My sources tell me he was quite the horn dog. Wouldn’t you agree?”
“No. He’s my son.”
“Oh. So you must be Radinka Holstein?” Corky glances at the camera. “I had heard that Gregori had a mortal mother, but honestly, I’m surprised she’s still alive.”
“What are you doing here, Ms. Courrant? I personally handled the invitations, and I know you were not invited.”
“An obvious mistake on your part, but I understand mortals are prone to human error. I’m certain you will want Gregori’s party featured on my show.”
Radinka plants her hands on her hips. “You have some gall showing up here. It’s because of you and your video that the secret about vampires was broken. Because of you, my son had to negotiate an agreement with the American government, and then he had to go on a dangerous trip, and he was nearly killed!”
“Ah yes, but then it is also thanks to me that your son met his future bride.” Corky smiles at the camera. “And there you have it, dear viewers! This engagement party would have never happened if it wasn’t for me!”
Another woman approaches. “Corky Courrant, you have some nerve coming here.”
“Why look, dear viewers, it’s Shanna Draganesti.” Corky presses a hand to her chest. “I can’t help but get a bit nostalgic. It was in this very room only six years ago that I shocked Shanna with the news that her boyfriend, Roman, was a vampire. And now, they’re happily married with two children! Thanks to me, of course. Isn’t it amazing how much power I wield in the vampire world?”
Shanna shakes her head. “You’re not welcome here.”
Corky laughs. “Is it true, Shanna, that you have joined the ranks of the Undead? It must have come as a great relief to you to no longer be an inferior human. Were you afraid your husband would leave you if you didn’t become a vampire?”
Shanna’s eyes narrow. “Have you received your summons to appear in Coven Court
next week to answer for your crime of breaking the vampire secret?”
Corky waved a dismissive hand. “What nonsense. There is no court on earth that could presume to judge me.”
“I’m calling security.” Shanna waves at Angus MacKay.
Corky turns to the camera. “And that’s it for our show tonight, dear viewers! See you tomorrow!” She and her cameraman teleport away.
And the disco music continues…
