WHAT’S THIS BOOK ABOUT:
One thing makes Jack Hunter invaluable to his Delta Force Team. The same trait that makes him suck at relationships. Single-minded focus on his career—and honing his ability to never miss a kill.
After a terrorist missile devastates his team and leaves him with only partial memory of a FUBARed rescue mission, he retains only one clear picture no one believes: the last face in his gunsight belonged to a prestigious American businessman. The man’s wife has to know something, but the only way to get to her is go AWOL.
After her husband trades his family to tango with double-Ds, Lauren Collins decides her dogs are better judges of character. She’s unaware how far her soon-to-be-ex’s web of deceit reaches—until the only thing between her, her sons and a killer is a wounded Delta soldier who activates her sorely neglected X-chromosome like nobody’s business.
Their instant attraction is kryptonite to Jack’s injury-dulled edge. Thrust into a world of peril, political treachery and treason, Lauren has no choice but to trust Jack with her life. Even if she and her sons survive, she’s not sure her heart will…
Jack and Lauren are thrown into this terrifying adventure of treason, terrorism, kidnapping, domestic killing sprees, and global war. Jack is still recovering from his injuries when he sets out to find answers as to why his mission in Lebanon went so wrong, starting with Lauren whose ex-husband he killed during the mission. There are too many questions to answer, and since Lauren’s ex-husband seems to be at the center of it, they work together to piece the puzzle.
This is the first book I’ve read by JL Saint and I was not disappointed. By far, this is the best military/suspense/romance I’ve ever read. It kept me on the edge of my seat holding my breath the entire time. I was so pulled into the story, I felt like I was the one the bad guys were hunting. I could hardly put the book down just dying to know how it all played out. The book had everything I look for in this genre; lots of action, a strong ALPHA hero, but one who was not overpowering with the caveman personality and an equally strong heroine who never whined about their situation. And believe me, she had plenty to gripe about. Not only were her children in danger, she was being shot at and chased throughout the entire book. Ms. Saint did her warfare homework and seems very knowledgeable in military combat and terms, not to mention weapons. The military character’s dialog is very detailed and helps with making the story even more interesting.
This was a thought-provoking book of stories within the story. Each story is written with a different point of view. So, you have this multi-layered story with all these characters, but they all tie in together. The villain in the story was disturbing in so many ways. His killer, chimpanzee son was one the creepiest things I’ve ever read. The setting for the main story is in South, and you all know how I love reading about my beloved, charming, southern hotties, and there’s a plus, these are also military. Yee Haw!
Every once in a while, I like a good suspense/romance story, and this one fit the bill. Only it’s not good, it’s very, very good! I was so excited to learn this is a series and the next installment Tactical Deception (Silent Warrior #2) will be out towards the end of this year. I highly recommend this book and I’m tickled to add another great author to my auto-buy list.
