I just want to take a moment to say CONGRATS to Lori Armstrong for her recent Shamus Award Nomination for best hardcover fiction for No Mercy. No Mercy is one of the very few NON-romance books I’ve read and I really enjoyed it, it’s the first book in Lori’s Mercy Gunderson series, I also enjoyed book 2, Mercy Kill. Lori has won a Shamus before for Snow Blind, book 4 from her Detective Julie Collins series.
How did an admitted ROMANCE junkie, like me, come to read NON-romances, well…I love all the books written by Lorelei James, when I finished them I found out she also writes mysteries as Lori Armstrong and ended up devouring all 6 books out under Lori Armstrong. Whether writing as Lorelei or Lori, the quality of her books are outstanding.
Naughty D’ on Lori’s Mysteries:
Both series are packed with emotion and suspense. The imagery LA uses puts you right there in the book. Neither Mercy nor Julie are your typical female leads, they are strong, they kick ass, they cuss, smoke and drink. NOW let me STRESS Naughty D doesn’t read anything but romances and DOES NOT read first person…well with the Mercy Gunderson and Julie Collins series, Naughty D read both, not only read, but devoured all four Julie Collins books and both Mercy books in 5 days!!! I read non-stop…so what does that say about the books….IF YOU NEED A BREAK FROM ROMANCE or just want to try something different, give Lori Armstrong a try.
I can’t rate these books using our battery rating, they aren’t romantic or erotic. But I do give No Mercy a 4 out of 5 and Snow Blind a 4 out of 5.
On medical leave from the Army, Mercy heads home to her family ranch after the recent death of her father, having been away for 20 years. It’s her responsibility to decide whether to sell the ranch or not, and she gets little help from her sister and nephew. After a dead body is discovered on her land, Mercy butts heads with the sheriff, Mason Dawson.
When another body is discovered, Mercy starts her own investigation into the deaths. As she unearths buried secrets, her life–and the lives of family members–are put in jeopardy.
|Book 4 in the Detective Julie Collins Series|
The frigid winter months are mighty slow in the PI biz for Julie Collins and her partner, Kevin Wells—until the duo is hired by a young woman to investigate problems at her grandfather’s assisted living facility, where they encounter lax security, unqualified healthcare personnel, and a shady senior volunteer organization. Julie barely has time to delve deeper into the puzzling case before she reluctantly finds herself in an isolated cattle shelter on the Collins ranch with her father during a raging blizzard. There is no escape from her father or from the biting cold and bitter memories. Julie is forced to wrestle with issues that make her question old wounds and new family loyalties. When the bodies and the snow pile up, Julie seems at odds with everyone, leaving her to wonder if she’s being blinded to the cold, hard truths in her life by love . . . or by hate
NOTE: NO REST FOR THE DEAD
Lori was also one of the TWENTY SIX contributing authors in the colossal novel No Rest for the Dead. I haven’t read it yet, but have heard from reliable sources that it is a really good book.
